The Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo is pleased to announce that the first annual Lorenzo Bonaldi Art Prize – EnterPrize is awarded for the exhibition project ANOTHER ZERO submitted by NOVEMBER PAYNTER.

Conceived to commemorate Lorenzo Bonaldi’s passion for art and collecting, this prize – to be awarded annually at the international level – is the first of its kind, as it recognizes and supports not the work of an artist but rather the research of a young curator and his or her exhibition project.

In the first phase of the awards process, five international advisors were each invited by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Director of the GAMeC of Bergamo, to nominate one young curator under the age of 30.  The following contestants have thus been named:

Martin Clark, Kent nominated by Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel, London
Elise Daubelcour, Marseilles nominated by Mescah Gaba, artist, Amsterdam
Anselm Franke, Berlin nominated by Ingvild Goetz, Goetz Collection, Monaco
Charlotte Mailler, Geneve nominated by Helena Kontova, Flash Art, Milan
November Paynter, Istanbul nominated by Carlos Basualdo, curator

These five contestants competed with each other in preparing an exhibition proposal that addresses not only critical, theoretical, and thematic issues but also practical and economic considerations.  The projects are conceived on the basis of an assigned budget and exhibition space.

In the second phase of the prize, a jury comprised by:

Jan Hoet, Director of the MartA, Herford
Marc Sanchez, Chief Curator of the Palais de Tokyo, Paris
Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, Director of GAMeC, Bergamo

Awarded the prize for the following reason:

In consideration of the interest and international prestige of the invited artists, the semantic relations established amongst the individual works, and the concepts on which the exhibition is based, and the rigor manifested in the choice of the works and intelligence characterizing the solution, the Lorenzo Bonaldi Art Prize – EnterPrize 2003 is awarded for the exhibition project ANOTHER ZEROsubmitted by NOVEMBER PAYNTER

The jury wanted to recognize the need that NOVEMBER PAYNTER felt to take the space of GAMeC itself as the point of departure for the exhibition project, in addition to the clear vision relating this site-specific project to the aspirations of the city.

The award will consist in realization of the exhibition project in February 2004 at the new wing of GAMeC in Bergamo.

By sponsoring this prize, the GAMeC di Bergamo wishes to highlight the importance of and key role assumed by curators not only on the international art scene but also in the broader context of contemporary cultural life.  Furthermore, it wishes to encourage and support the talent of a young curator at an extremely critical time in his or her professional development.
