Curated by November Paynter, winner of the “Premio LORENZO BONALDI – ENTER PRIZE,” this exhibition at GAMeC will feature the works of Haluk Akakçe, Tobias Bernstrup, Tobias Collier, Tom Friedman, Saskia Olde Wolbers, and Keith Tyson.

From February 6 to May 2, 2004, GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo will host the group show Another Zero, curated by November Paynter, winner of the first annual “Premio Lorenzo Bonaldi per L’Arte – EnterPrize”.

This prize, the only one of its kind, sprang from the desire to commemorate Lorenzo Bonaldi’s passion for art and collecting and is intended to support the innovative work of a young curator and his or her original exhibition project. The aim of this award is to highlight the key role and importance of curators not only on the international art scene but also in the broader context of contemporary cultural practices, in addition to encouraging and supporting the talent of a young curator at an extremely critical moment in his or her professional career.
The exhibition, entitled “Another Zero,” will be set up in the large hall of the new wing of GAMeC, which was recently remodeled by the architectural firm Studio Gregotti e Associati. It will feature six international artists, Haluk Akakçe, Tobias Bernstrup, Tobias Collier, Tom Friedman, Saskia Olde Wolbers, and Keith Tyson
The exhibition project “Another Zero” is inspired by a film, “Powers of Ten,” made by Charles and Ray Eames in 1977. This nine-minute “short” plays on the relativity of concepts of space and time. It starts with a shot of a man sleeping on a picnic cloth. The lens then steadily zooms back – ten times every ten seconds – until it frames the earth seen from space. The movie camera then zooms back in again until it frames an atom in the sleeping man’s hand.

Each one of the artists invited by November Paynter to show their work will interpret this concept of spatial-temporal relativity in a different way according to the sensibility and expressive languages that they are most comfortable with.
For example, Haluk Akakçe will create a mural painting conceived specifically for the large hall of GAMeC that will function as the compositional tool for the setting of the entire exhibition. Consisting of geometric systems and architectural structures, Akakçe’s work will generate different perspective angles inside the gallery. Sculptures created by Tom Friedman from a mélange of domestic materials, will be installed on the floor and lower part of the walls in the hall. Keith Tyson and Tobias Collier will endeavor to grasp the complex system governing our universe. Tyson will create a new “lecture work” for Another Zero: this will be one of his typical wall installations that combine drawing, diagrams, and flows of information. In Collier’s work, instead, places and common objects of daily life are set in relation to the greatest existential questions. Saskia Olde Wolbers will present a video, where small, handmade constructions will become the film sets and backdrop for stories recounting the intertwined relationships between different people. In an analogous way,Tobias Bernstrup uses computer technology to present imaginary environments where worlds exist inside other worlds.
